Musala Extreme starts with a steep climb from Borovets to Mount Yastrebets, then continues along the ridge toward Mount Aleko and Mount Lyudmil Yankov. Along the way you’ll see breathtaking views of the entire Rila range, as well as Pirin, Vitosha, and the Balkan Mountains. The ridge includes sections that require extra attention and skills for navigating rocky and steep terrain. After reaching Musala, the course passes through typical mountain running terrain with fast and runnable sections on the descents from Musala peak, the Twin Peaks, and Marishki Chal. The ascent of Mount Mancho will take your breath away – not only because of the accumulated fatigue, but also because it is one of the least-visited yet most beautiful peaks in Rila. After enjoying the scenery, especially the Maritsa Lakes valley, the course is all downhill – first to Zavrachitsa Hut and Maritsa Hut, and then to the final checkpoint at Chakar Voyvoda Hut. The route is demanding and combines endurance, speed, technical skills, and focus.
For runners looking for a shorter and less technical challenge, there will also be parallel races – Yastrebets Trail and 8 km Run. The course of Yastrebets Trail Run leads participants through Yastrebets and Markudjik ski centers on a marked route up to Yastrebets Peak, before returning via the Musala Trail back to the start/finish area and the 8 km race will be up to the Middle Station of the gondola lift and back to the Musala Trail and Borovets.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in both races in the following categories: Men, Men 45+, Women, and Women 45+.
There is also a team competition for the event’s cup, with no limit on the number of team members. The winning team is the one with the most total kilometers completed by its finishers.
The race is challenging – all athletes must be well-prepared, in excellent physical and mental condition, and equipped with the required gear.
Competitors must be familiar with the length and specific features of the course, and be able to handle all challenges independently, including bad weather (rain, fog, cold, heat), potential injuries, and encounters with wild animals.
All participants must sign a declaration of consent with the rules and waiver of liability for the organizers.
